The most empty and slavish of abject obedience is not obedience to a master, a hierarchy or a ruling class, or may be harshly constrained to these, one has to go on living, it is obedience to the rule that creates this scaled structure of domination, or this hierarchy, these classes, the master, the servant. This law is the competitive struggle to get the carved out places, classed in space, or to form them, constitute them. This struggle creates the classes and the classes create it, Whoever throws himself into the battle therefore obeys, transcendentally.

Michel Serres, Genesis, p.96
